1st Annual Urban Gentleman GENTLEMAN AWARDS, Best of 2009

We thought it would be fun to start the new year with our first ever GENTLEMAN Awards. This isn't an event (yet) just an annual tradition we've decided to start that will give worldwide web recognition to the best of 2009.

Best Trend: the Plaid Shirt

An extension of Clodhopper: Farmer's Delight, the plaid shirt made a permanent fixture into the lives of trendsetters everywhere. The plaid shirt made it easy for people to look cool this year. When in doubt on what to wear, one only had to put on a plaid shirt, denim jeans, and pair of their favorite shoes-- be it TK Society Supras or Common Project loafers.

Best Accessory: the Wayfarer

Like the plaid shirt, instantaneous style and swag was brought to those who wore wayfarers this year. And though it started with the traditional Rayban wayfarer other eyewear designers have created modified versions of the wayfarer that make choosing the perfect pair quite difficult these days.

Best Brand: Levi's

Jeans are a basic essential for every person in the modern world, and this year their importance was magnified by popular trends (such as summer rolls, plaid shirts, and skinny jeans). Levi's is one of the few brands that can be seen on the most frugal working-class person to the most lavish pompous celebrity. The mixture of popular trends and Levi's classic brand image made the jean company one of the best in 2009. They continue to develop their styles with each passing year, while keeping their price-points low and quality high... everyone should own a pair of Levi's.

Best Designer: Etro

From their handsomely diverse models to their one-of-a-kind patterns and motifs, leave it to Etro to do fashion as it should be done. In a year of unwanted gloominess from messed up economies its only right to give the best designer title to a label that brought us happiness through opulently colorful designs.

Best Dressed Musical Artist: Kid Cudi

He's the face of our assorted swank and you guys voted him as having the best style. Kid Cudi has had a great year, so why not top it off by giving the man on the moon best dressed musical artist.

Celebrity Urban Gentleman of the Year: Zac Efron

It's like he made the Rihanna transformation, he went from having a cute Disney teeny-bopperish persona to dapper masculinity. Zac is always hitting the gym, trying new looks, and most importantly he continues to bring forth consistent well-put together style (which includes top-notch grooming.) He doesn't over do it, but does just enough to keep him on anyone's best dressed list... he's sort of like the mini David Beckham. I'm curious to see how his style matures in 2010.

Local Urban Gentleman of the Year: (two way tie)

Jamie Ryan McFarland & Kendrack Lewis

We get alot of submissions for Local Urban Gentleman, and though we appreciate everyone's eagerness and want to be the next Urban Gentleman very few people submit clear clean obviously stylish photos. Icon of the Year: Michael Jackson

He is was literally the most famous person in the world, the most influential artist, and a true humanitarian-- our planet suffered a huge loss when Michael Jackson passed away this summer. He's the King of Music and will be forever missed. Rest In Peace MJ.

Person of the Year: President Barack Obama

Whether you had the majestic opportunity to vote for him or not, we all must admit that this man being president has literally changed our world-- for the better. President Obama inherited one of the worst financial situations ever and constantly faces hate from the unfortunately ignorant, but still manages to be the perfect example of what a man should be and continues to develop into one of the best world leaders this world has ever seen. Oh and let's not forget he won a freakin' Nobel Peace Prize. He's obviously not perfect, no one is, he's going to make mistakes, but he has a good heart and for that reason the world continues to support him. Go here to keep the support up.

His Basics

Someone sent us the photos above and below that feature alot of "stuff" that we'll call "his basics". Alot of creative types have taken pictures of their basics before-- be it a pair of wayfarers, their iphone, favorite watch, and hat -or- their daily spectacles, wallet, moleskine, and slr. Their basics are usually spread out in a way that describes them (neat or a little messy) and the picture is usually taken in a place or on something that adds to their personality (on their steel desk, on the bed, on a desk covered with magazine clippings etc). And basically, we think it would be cool if you guys sent us photos of your basics... so think about the items you own that are most essential, maybe items you favor above the rest; then take a clear picture and send it to urbangentblog@gmail.com. If we get enough entries we'll have a contest and you guys can choose the best. (include your name, location, and list all the items you've included).

Denim Focused, Get the Look: David Beckham & the Denim Shirt

As mentioned in the latest trend report, Sir David Beckham is really putting the basic denim shirt back on the map. Though the reincarnation of this trend "officially" launched in Fall 2008, we're just now (Fall/Winter 2009/2010) seeing the trendy rise of denim button-ups and "double denim" looks on stylish celebrities and urban gentlemen. Everyone may not be able to pull off double-denim looks (jean shirt + jean pants), but it's easy to pair a denim shirt with khakis or black flat-front soft corduroy trousers.

If you don't already have one, be sure to add atleast one denim shirt to your winter wardrobe.

City Art: Stephen Wiltshire, Artistic Genius

After posting the black and white aerial New York photos yesterday, we received a note from reader Mircrow about artist Stephen Wiltshire. After doing a little research we discovered his inspiring story... Stephen Wiltshire is a British artist who's known for his amazingly detailed drawings of cityscapes. Stephen was born mute and was diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder at the age of three. At age four, Stephen was sent to a special needs school in London where he expressed an interest in drawing and began to communicate through his art, read more about his story here.

Urban Gent LOOK BOOK: Winter Color.

For this look I was inspired to use a mildly monochromatic color palette and splashes of color. It all began with the blue cotton button up with tab roll-up sleeves. I chose to pair the button-up with a lighter pair of distressed jeans, these have a unique paint design. The washed-out Diesel canvas hi-tops perfectly coordinate with the jeans-- creating the base of the monochromatic look. Then the golden yellow cardigan was added, along with the red scarf for additional splashes of color. An all white watch and white wayfarers were added to complete the white color palette. And finally, the brown leather bag acts as optional accessory, creating a relaxed distressed winter look.

The AVATAR Movies... Obvious Racism???

Disclaimer: This may be an uncomfortable article for those sensitive or oblivious on issues of race and reality. In that case, you may not want to continue reading.

Okay, so last night I was coaxed into seeing James Cameron's Avatar. Why coaxed, well because I never planned to see it, for some reason or another the movie never interested me, but my friend had an extra ticket and wanted to go with someone. I watched the movie at an imax theater, so I must say it looked absolutely amazing. But let me get to the meat of why I'm making this random posting. Well, I hate to have to go here, but, okay how can I put this in a "PC" way.... the movie Avatar by James Cameron, has "twisted diversity" (you guys can interpret that how you want). Nah, I think that doesn't give the proper gist of what I'm trying to say, Avatar has "backwards/ignorant diversity" which made the movie completely wack in my opinion (and that's putting it mildly).

Trend Report: 12/18/2009

Timberland Premium 6-inch Boots

This is your official public service announcement of the latest trends. If you're a regular here at The Urban Gentleman, then you may already know most of these.

As of Friday December 18, 2009:

1. It seems as if summer rolls, can now be called winter cuffs. Cold weather has not deterred those ecstatically dedicated to rolling up their pants. As predicted matching socks warms those cold ankles, the traditional gents stick to their navys, browns, and argyle, while those less than so are opting for patterns and bright happy colors.

2. Denim jackets have made their comeback, but thanks to gents like David Beckham many are choosing to skip the jackets and are opting for denim shirts instead.

3. The stylishly advanced have been wearing plaid shirts for well over a year, and quite frankly, are ready to move on. But the stylishly regular are not ready to let go, but I for one understand-- it does look good on them. People need patterns during these not as happy, recession times, so you can expect to see plaid or variations of the plaid for a bit longer.

4. Though with northerners Timbs (aka Timberlands) never went out of vogue, the rest of the world looked at other options in bootwear over these past few years. Well, Timbs (the classic 6-in) are back-- for everyone this winter... and with the way certain trends are moving we may be able to expect them to be worn (someway somehow) throughout the spring along with high-top boat shoes.

One of The Urban Gentleman fall/winter trends is Hard-Studded, basically it's wearing clothes that figuratively look rough or evoke toughness-- leather, studded jackets, rugged jeans, boots, etc. So when I saw this picture on PimPumPam I HAD to show you guys... this goes pretty hard huh? So now maybe this trend will get more love on our "What's your favorite fall/winter trend" poll... Assorted Swank and Conservative Dapper are in a constant battle for first place... be sure to place your vote.

Mr. Louboutin: Pharrell Williams... upgrade from Vans to Louboutins.

Throughout the fall/winter, BBC king Pharrell Williams has been seen sporting Christian Louboutin studded shoes instead of his usual comfy Vans. Known for their high-end stilettos with the signature red bottoms, often worn by the likes of Victoria Beckham and Rihanna, the folks at Louboutin are really upping the ante on men's shoes. Kanye once proclaimed himself Louis Vuitton Don... is Pharrell the new Louboutin Don? Nah, that sounds too corny. Urban Gent LOOK BOOK: The Outdoorsman

I wanted to create a simple look that focused on warmth and manliness. I began with the Eddie Bauer quilted vest; puffy coats are in at the moment and the huntery-olive green color of this vest gives a feeling of outdoors in the winter. I then searched for a shoe to match-- a boot was a given, and these Eastland boots are not only full of style (and on sale), but have a timeless appeal that will consistently flow into the winter wardrobe of any man who purchases them. The denim came next, I first paired the vest and boots with a pair of corduroy trousers, and though they matched well, it made the look more preppy and less outdoorsy, so I opted for a pair of straight-legged rugged jeans. I then needed a shirt, I initially focused on long-sleeve shirts in reds, browns, greens, and plaids, but none of them quite coordinated with the vest. So I began to look for henleys, they're simple, warm, manly and this grey and red one adds the perfect amount of subtle contrast that allows for each piece to stand on its own. As always accessories help to pull a look together, and I needed to bring out the warm red on the shirt, while still allowing the look to flow. The Johnston & Murphy scarf ties together the warm red and the blue jeans with its subtle pattern. The outdoors bag was added as an optional accessory, and of course the belt matches the shoes. And that's how I created this simple manly outdoorsman look.

- Goodfellas, The Untouchables, Carlito's Way: Every guy has atleast a small place in his heart for gangster movies. These are three classics that will certainly give more street-cred to any DVD collection.

- Godfather II (1974), Heat (1995), Righteous Kill (2008): Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino are a duo that we just can't get enough of. See a mini evolution of the two in these three DVDs.

- Pursuit of Happiness, Seven Pounds, Enemy of the State: Funny guy turned serious, Will Smith has truly grown as an actor. First he gave us comedy, then action packed Blockbuster hits like Bad Boys and Independence Day, now he makes us shed tears. Personally, I think Seven Pounds should have won an Oscar (or atleast a nomination).

- Great Debaters, The Tuskegee Airmen, Glory: There's nothing like inspiring American movies. These three movies not only make you more knowledgeable about Americans and American history, but inspire you to be a better person.

Vintage Upgrade

Let's be honest, people who own and listen to records, yeah like actual LPs, are just a little cooler than other people, lol... it's the truth. And while many of us admire them we don't actually go out and buy a record player or vinyls, we don't even rummage through our grandparents attics/basements/garages for their old record player and records-- even though its free. Well, this just might be the Christmas to give the gift of "vintage-living". Check out a few turntables HERE. Alot of new albums come out on LPs in addition to CDs, check out a wide range of LPs here. You can also purchase many of the classics at vintage record stores or at thrift stores in your area.

Subscriptions

We're in the era of free ish-- everyone's album is online for free as is most movies and most television series. And though we can get quality music for free (I'm not endorsing that btw), it's harder to watch quality movies (besides the ones on Hulu of course). So give the gift of Netflix this Christmas. A Netflix subscription is a perfect gift for guys who are in love with their flat screens, for guys who spend more time at home these days, or for guys that just like to be entertained. The great thing about Netflix is that you can now automatically watch the movies online or on your TV (if you have a compatible device). It's only $8.99 a month and you can purchase any subscription amount you want, 1 month to 1 year. More details here.

Blockbuster also has a similar program, but it's an extra $3 a month and you can't watch online. You can however exchange the DVD up to 5 times in-store. So this may be a good option if you prefer choosing a DVD in person-- you essentially get to rent 5 DVDs at $2.40/each per month. More details here.

'Tis the Season for Gift Giving: The Urban Gentleman Ultimate GIFT GUIDE for MEN

Okay, lets get down to business, you need gifts and you need them now. You're a guy or a gal who's in serious need of help on what to get: the fashion-forward stylish friend or man in your life (you know the one who technically dresses better than you), or the young up and coming urban gentleman who has watched a little too much of Run's House (particularly Diggy) and now wants to emulate everyone stylish (he's on a mission to have the best style, the sickest fashions, and is the only 13-yr old you know who wears glasses without prescription), or you're just simply looking for a unique solid gift idea that will appease your friend, brother, boyfriend, husband, dad-- basically a guy or guys in your life that deserve (or don't deserve) a nice thoughtful gift.

Loyal Urban Gent readers already know the trends, but if you're not a regular go ahead and boost your style IQ by reading about the TRENDS in men style (seriously click on the link then come back to this article and continue reading). You want to choose a gift that will either compliment his style or up-it, and based on the current trends and your personal analysis of him you should be able to gauge how "fashionable" he is and get an idea of what you would like to purchase him.

From the current Urban Gentleman "What Do You Want for Christmas" Poll, it seems as if most guys want casual apparel for the Holidays, followed by dressy apparel, then electronics. So we're going to work with that. With that said, grooming items are always an easy surefire way to atleast bring on an authentic smile and thank you. Grooming items may not be on the very top of most gift lists, but a great smelling fragrance will be used everyday.

Okay so here's the approach: you call or text the guy you are purchasing the gift(s) for, and ask for his basic size information, "Hey ___his name___, I'm about to go holiday shopping and I just wanted to get your sizes just in case I buy you clothing?" You should get their pants/waist size (a number like 32, 34, 36), their shirt size (M, L, XL), shoe size, and dress shirt size just in case you opt for the dressy apparel (based on their neck and arm length you should get a number like 17/35 or 16.5/36). Coats, blazers, and jackets usually come as M, L, XL or 36,38,40 (which is the chest size) If you are buying someone a suit (how nice), be sure to get that information as well.

I always try to, if possible, give gifts in pairs-- it's fun to have more presents to open up, right? If having to choose from one pair of $150 jeans -or- one pair of shoes and 2 shirts at $150, most people would go with the latter. But at the end of the day quality is better than quantity (for the most part).

Obviously a Playstation, Xbox, Wii, and DJ Hero Renegade Edition with Jay-Z and Eminem will be on the lists of many young Urban Gentlemen. A flat screen, blackberry, GPS navigational system, or slr may be on the lists of all the other Urban Gentlemen. If you have the money and they don't already own it, I'll certainly suggest getting them one of the items above, but besides those fun gadgets I've listed a few specific gift ideas below. Note: though most of the suggestions combine two or three items, they can also be broken down into individual items that would make as great singular gifts.

Budget Friendly: $40ish or less.
If you have a small budget... no more than $50, but more like $20/$25, then I suggest getting a gift that compliments something they already have or plan to receive for the holidays. If they are going to get an ipod, then get them stylish headphones or a digital docking speaker system. If he's a sneakerhead who expects more fly kicks, get him a unique fitted hat. If his Christmas is going to be filled cardigans and blazers, purchase a quality scarf or men's messenger/satchel bag. If he's getting alot of money-- maybe a new wallet would be nice. When you don't have alot of money to spend thoughtful gifts are best, they show the person that you really do pay attention and care.
