The Best of 2008

I'm writing this post from my phone... Since I won't be able to get back to my computer anytime soon. I started a "Best of 2008" post, but I won't be able to finish it before 12. So I just wanted to make a quick unedited list of what I thought was the best styles and stuff in 2008.

Best Item/Trend:
Skinny ties. There was nothing more refreshing than seeing guys hitting the red carpet in a skinny tie. Zac Efron is one of the best examples of a star that who rocked this trend very well.

Best Designer:
Damn, this is such a hard one, but ummm let's see. Ralph? Sean? Marc? Thom?.... I feel like DSquared did a pretty bang up job in 2008, but really guys this is a hard one, hmmm for the sake of giving you one answer I'll say Marc Jacobs- since he basically designs like 3 lines- Marc by Marc Jacobs, Marc Jacobs, and Louis Vuitton... I just feel like that's such a cliche' response. So I'm open to your opinions on this one...

Best New Designer:
Why Bejamin Bixby of course. I'm sorry, but no one ever quite does it like Andre 3000. I am confident in his ability to continue to create classically stylish clothing. If he keeps it up and pushes a little harder, he should be designer of the year in a few years.

Best Dressed Athlete:
David Beckham. I don't even have to expound on this because its so obvious.

Best Dressed Young Star:
Chris Brown. C-Breezy is a young stylish guy and I'll just leave it at that.

Best Style:
Urban Prep. This style is the signature Urban Gentleman look... The modern man must learn to mix the classics with modern trends and following this look is an easy way to get there.

Best Dressed Male All Around
... well from the looks of the survey on the top left section of the site-- Kanye West still seems to dominate. And I agree, he's one stylish dude.

Best Moment in 2008:
Barack Obama becoming President... November 4th 2008 will forever be one of the best days of my life.

Person of The Year:
C'mon that's an easy one. Barack Obama. America and this world just won't be the same. He gives hopes to so many people, and... well, you guys know the deal.

Let Me Know What You All Think Was Great In 2008...

HAPPY NEW YEARS!!! Be safe tonight and don't drink and drive.

1st Annual Urban Gentleman GENTLEMAN AWARDS, Best of 2009

We thought it would be fun to start the new year with our first ever GENTLEMAN Awards. This isn't an event (yet) just an annual tradition we've decided to start that will give worldwide web recognition to the best of 2009.

Best Trend: the Plaid Shirt
An extension of Clodhopper: Farmer's Delight, the plaid shirt made a permanent fixture into the lives of trendsetters everywhere. The plaid shirt made it easy for people to look cool this year. When in doubt on what to wear, one only had to put on a plaid shirt, denim jeans, and pair of their favorite shoes-- be it TK Society Supras or Common Project loafers.

Best Accessory: the Wayfarer
Like the plaid shirt, instantaneous style and swag was brought to those who wore wayfarers this year. And though it started with the traditional Rayban wayfarer other eyewear designers have created modified versions of the wayfarer that make choosing the perfect pair quite difficult these days.

Best Brand: Levi's
Jeans are a basic essential for every person in the modern world, and this year their importance was magnified by popular trends (such as summer rolls, plaid shirts, and skinny jeans). Levi's is one of the few brands that can be seen on the most frugal working-class person to the most lavish pompous celebrity. The mixture of popular trends and Levi's classic brand image made the jean company one of the best in 2009. They continue to develop their styles with each passing year, while keeping their price-points low and quality high... everyone should own a pair of Levi's.

Best Designer: Etro
From their handsomely diverse models to their one-of-a-kind patterns and motifs, leave it to Etro to do fashion as it should be done. In a year of unwanted gloominess from messed up economies its only right to give the best designer title to a label that brought us happiness through opulently colorful designs.

Best Dressed Musical Artist: Kid Cudi
He's the face of our assorted swank and you guys voted him as having the best style. Kid Cudi has had a great year, so why not top it off by giving the man on the moon best dressed musical artist.

Celebrity Urban Gentleman of the Year: Zac Efron
It's like he made the Rihanna transformation, he went from having a cute Disney teeny-bopperish persona to dapper masculinity. Zac is always hitting the gym, trying new looks, and most importantly he continues to bring forth consistent well-put together style (which includes top-notch grooming.) He doesn't over do it, but does just enough to keep him on anyone's best dressed list... he's sort of like the mini David Beckham. I'm curious to see how his style matures in 2010.

Local Urban Gentleman of the Year: (two way tie)
Jamie Ryan McFarland & Kendrack Lewis

We get alot of submissions for Local Urban Gentleman, and though we appreciate everyone's eagerness and want to be the next Urban Gentleman very few people  submit clear clean obviously stylish photos. Jamie Ryan McFarland-- our first overseas local gentleman exemplifies the type of submissions we like to get for local urban gentleman. Read more HERE.

Handsome southern educator Kendrack Lewis is also one of our favorite Urban Gentlemen to date. His style is exactly what our founding editor had in mind when she first created The Urban Gentleman. Read more HERE.

Icon of the Year: Michael Jackson
He is was literally the most famous person in the world, the most influential artist, and a true humanitarian-- our planet suffered a huge loss when Michael Jackson passed away this summer. He's the King of Music and will be forever missed. Rest In Peace MJ.

Trends to Remember: The Fashions of Michael Jackson.

Person of the Year: President Barack Obama
Whether you had the majestic opportunity to vote for him or not, we all must admit that this man being president has literally changed our world-- for the better. President Obama inherited one of the worst financial situations ever and constantly faces hate from the unfortunately ignorant, but still manages to be the perfect example of what a man should be and continues to develop into one of the best world leaders this world has ever seen. Oh and let's not forget he won a freakin' Nobel Peace Prize. He's obviously not perfect, no one is, he's going to make mistakes, but he has a good heart and for that reason the world continues to support him. Go here to keep the support up.

Let us know your best of 2009: best trends, styles, celebrities, moments, etc. And feel free to tell us the worst of 2009 as well.

Happy New Years everyone! Be safe tonight and don't drink and drive.

Best of 2008.

David Beckham: English Perfection

Beckham won Best MLS Player at the 2008 Espy Awards
last month. His attire was impeccable.

If I had to define Best Dressed I would define it as: what one becomes when he wears the attire of persons such as David Beckham. Then I would have a picture of Beckham next to it. . . seriously though he is ALWAYS on my best-dressed list and has yet to disappoint. He never under or over dresses, never tries too hard, or looks too casual- he dresses for perfection wherever he goes. And he is the PERFECT person to mimic if you want to have flawless style.

David Beckham is a total package, he combines athletic w/ suave w/sexy w/masculine w/urban w/cool w/prep w/tailored w/modern w/classic with everything fly to make a look that men crave to one day have. And he creates trends that would otherwise seem corny... including his "one shirt tail in one shirt tail out" look:

David at Teen' s Choice Award-
he won Choice Male Athlete

ZOOMED in on the "one-shirt tail in"

One thing to note about Beckham is that he always wears a quality brown leather belt- always... never black or tan, but brown- which I feel is so classic. To get the David Beckham look you must combine:

button down shirt + cardigan + relaxed fit jeans + brown leather belt + beaded bracelets= David Beckham's Style.

You can easily imitate him by shopping at Express, they'll have everything from the shirt to the optional tie. And most importantly Express will have the jeans that are a major part of the look.

His serious style and swagger has recently landed him on yet another "Best-Dressed" List, this time- Vanity Fair's International Best Dressed List. Check out his short interview in the magazine:

David Beckham
Residence: Los Angeles.
Occupation: Midfielder, Los Angeles Galaxy.
Age: 33.
Style icon: Steve McQueen.
Favorite clothing purchase of 2008: "There is still time in 2008, so ask me next year."
Tailor: Armani.
Most frequently worn items: "Due to the L.A. weather, it has to be a simple pair of shorts and top, at the moment."
Favorite sunglasses: "My wife’s range of dVb aviators."
Causes: "Victoria and I have the David and Victoria Beckham Children’s Charity, about which I am very passionate. I am also a goodwill ambassador for unicef."

Check out more pictures of David and his family at the Teen's Choice Awards:

David is also in this month's Men's Health:

Extracts from his interview:

On his comfort zone: "There is this madness around me, around my family. Without a doubt, out on the field is where I'm most comfortable, where I'm happiest, because I know what I'm doing, and I know I can do it."

On losing: "I'm a really bad loser. It stays with me for a while. I always take it quite personally when we don't win as a team or I don't win in everything else I do."

On relaxing: "People always ask me, 'Do you play golf?' Because a majority of sportsmen do. I used to play, quite a few years ago, but to be honest, I'd rather spend four hours with the kids than four hours on a golf course. As much as it can be relaxing, it's a frustrating sport. My way of relaxing is listening to music and spending time with the kids."

What another player said to him when he was 13 years old: "You'll never play for England, because you're too small and not strong enough."

One asking who is the best dressed rapper alive and another asking who has better style Lupe or Kanye.... and for the best dressed rapper... the winner is drum-roll please-- Kanye! (i know y'all thinking "duh we can read the title of the post) and for better style-- Lupe. Perplexing results huh? Well I figured I'd launch the ultimate poll and ask who has the better style between Andre 3000, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, and Pharrell Williams.... now that's a tough poll. My votes goes to.... well, it doesn't matter, but who does your go to? VOTE NOW (oh and ummm, vote Obama, haha)

Men's Red Carpet Fashion: 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, Kid Cudi, Jonas Brothers, Travis Barker, Trey Songz, Jay-Z, and more Celebrities.

The 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards held at the Staples Center on January 31, 2010 in Los Angeles, California.

For the most part the guys looked good, everyone kept with their usual look or style. I just hate that once again the show proved that receiving a Grammy doesn't mean what it used to, the people who deserve it never seem to win (ie. Black Eyed Peas should have won Album of the Year).

Check out our collection of celebrities at the 2010 Grammy Awards, on the red carpet, at the show, and after:

They Play Hard, They Dress Even Harder: Best Dressed Athletes

King James is a king of style

When I was out shopping for blazers and sport coats with one of my friends last week, he kept mentioning how he wanted to get that "Dwayne Wade Look". I chuckled as he continued, "He had on this orange and brown outfit one day, and I want to get that same look, you know that Dwayne Waaaade look". Well my friend based his opinion of Dwayne Wade's style on one outfit he saw him wear in a magazine or on tv. . . little did he know that Dwayne Wade is more often than not, found looking quite stylish. But Dwayne Wade isn't the only professional athlete who dresses so well he could double as a model, there's a slew of well-dressed men in the athletic world.

My top picks (in no particular order):

1. Lebron James
He's called King James for a reason and style is definitely one.

Lebron, dude. . .you look fly

Jay-Z and Lebron in Vegas

Lebron's casual look is really cool as he's posing w/ Jimmy Kimmel

2. David Beckham
He's always at the top of my best-dressed list. What can I say those Brits just have great style. Not only is he the new face of Emporio Armani, he also has a wife that's equally as chic- Victoria Beckham.

Classic perfection in this suit

The new face of Emporio Armani. . .underwear

He really has a thing for the "one shirt tail in, one shirt tail out" look

see. . .he 's doing it again

David & Victoria Beckham

3. Thierry Henry
Some of you Americans may not know who he is (lol), but my international readers and true sports fans know that he is a sharp dresser. His charm and style has landed him a contract as an international "brand ambassador" for Tommy Hilfiger.

I love the suit, great color & material

An international brand ambassador for Tommy Hilifiger

A natural Urban Gentleman

In Barcelona, 2008

4. Dwayne Wade
He always shows up to award shows and events wearing the latest trends and wearing them well. And besides. . . it seems like alot of gentleman are trying to get the "Dwayne Wade look".

Dwayne rockin the "country/cowboy" look

At the Jay-Z/MJB Tour Kick-off in Miami, 2008

Dwayne loves those Tom Ford aviators

At his 26th birthday bash, 2008

Honorable Mentions:

Will Demps - he's most women's picture of perfection and his fashion sense has allowed him to snag Hollywood hotties like R&B singer Letoya Luckett.

Tom Brady - he dresses how I expect and want athletes to dress- stylish & clean. I'm sure his girlfriend, supermodel Gisele, gives him plenty of fashion tips.

Alex Rodriguez - he has a really classic style that has made him a GQ favorite.

Terrell Owens - some say cocky athletes always have great style. . .hmmm, I don't know about that, but T.O definitely does.

Reggie Bush
- he's actually one of the best dressed men in the NFL, he dresses up & down almost flawlessly. He has the complete Urban Gentleman look, he just doesn't have the UG swagger or class quite yet. . .but I'm sure he'll get there soon.

The Dandy: Self-made, Well-dressed, Well-mannered, and Traditional or Flamboyant.

Dandy. When I hear that word a slew of things come to mind, a few of them being: the phrase "well, isn't that just dandy", the image of a flamboyantly dressed gentleman somewhere in Europe, the childhood song "Yankee Doodle", the book "Great Gatsby", and a few stylish men- one being Fonzworth Bentley.

Though I've learned about dandies here and there throughout life, I've never just sat down and researched dandies and dandyism myself. So, I decided to, and this is what I found...

(pictured left, the first dandy George Brummel)

According to Webster:
Main Entry: 1dan·dy
Pronunciation: \ˈdan-dē\
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural dandies

Etymology: probably short for jack-a-dandy, from 1jack + a (of) + dandy (origin unknown)
Date: circa 1780
1 : a man who gives exaggerated attention to personal appearance
2 : something excellent in its class
So basically, a dandy is indeed a well-dressed man. To go further he is, "a man who places, particular importance or physical appearance, refined language, and leisurely hobbies." The history of the dandy is rather interesting, being that he's often defined in several ways:

1. a self-made person, who rejected bourgeois values, adapting a carefree, indolent lifestyle while emulating aristocracy

2. a person of middle class background, who imitated aristocratic style

-or simply-

3. a refined, elegant man

I find that, historically, most dandies were either very wealthy or middle class. The wealthy ones would dress extravagantly and were either flanuers- men who wanted to quintessentially experience life and observe beauty and art -OR- men who played many games (billiards, hunting, etc), lived at the cafes, dined at the inns, and were seemingly idle. The middle class dandies were often men who were innately stylish, causing them to be fawned over by the aristocrats, and their elegance and style made them extremely influential in their societies.

A famous dandy, Baudelaire, commented that the dandies had "no profession other than elegance...no other status but that of cultivating the idea of beauty in their own persons....The dandy must aspire to be sublime without interruption; he must live and sleep before a mirror."

So elegance is his job? Hmmm... let's have a closer look into "dandyism".
(excerpt from thedandy.org)

"Dandyism was born "officially" in the early 1800's. At this time there was a lot of change going on politically [the French had recently made their king a bit shorter- by a head], and socially as England was quickly surpassing France as the major cultural influence in Europe and America. What happened in short was this. A young man whose name was George Bryan Brummel, the son of a undersecretary made friends with the Prince Regent, and became one of the most influential, and even powerful men in the nation, not by his birthright, or education, or military prowess, or scholastic accomplishment...but by being well dressed.
George made quite an impression on English society, and caused many powerful people to abandon their gaudy Baroque-ish outfits and adopt Mr. Brummel's clean, elegant, simple toned manner of dressing. George Brummel's perfection of style gained him access to the highest of English society: the Dandy was born. The Dandy was a gentleman first, any other title HAD to come second. The fact that he was of noble blood of any rank, whose job had traditionally been to dress well as a sign of social standing, could be an obstacle to being a Dandy if he relied on his title, and not his style. Thus any gentleman through a command of the dress and manners of good society, could gain access to the social influence of the aristocracy. Thus, an aristocrat could only be a Dandy if his pride was his appearance and manners, not this title. Nor could a nobleman of any rank be a Dandy if he dropped in his title in conversation in order to impress, or took more pride in his heritage than his style. If ever he relied on his title, he lost his Dandyhood. This new standard had a dramatic effect on the English landscape, and wasn't long before heading across the channel to France. We'll stop with the history, and explain a bit more about the characteristics.
A Dandy pursed elegance, it was his ultimate and unique goal. Everything he did was designed to make his social presentation more elegant, thus great care had to be taken not to appear too extravagant in his dress, and of course never slovenly. A Dandy was also not a man who wares flamboyant clothing. His outfits are designed to please and add elegance and swagger to his presentation; not make him stand out a mile away, so Oscar Wilde was NOT a Dandy- in the strict definition of the term.

Oscar Wilde is not a traditional dandy

This trend of using elegant dress to influence people, while not being a novel one, nevertheless was an important one, because as there were Macaronis, Hell rakes, Fops, and other sorts of fancy figures in the history of Europe and America, they never were able to cross that line into real social power unless they had been born there. The Dandy was the first. This meant that as the 19th Century progressed, it was not a narrow aristocracy of birth that ran society, but a collection of well dressed, well mannered gentlemen who all obeyed the same set of rules, and for whom- any of whom, regardless of birth, to break the rules of etiquette, meant banishment form society. Influence and power was based around being well bred, not of noble birth... [The] Dandy is a man whose pursuit of elegance, in matters of dress, manners, and speech gains him a respect that nothing else can give. "

So flamboyant doesn't define a dandy at all, not the original dandy anyway. Using one's style and speech to achieve social status... that's an everyday thing in this century, though many fail with their pedestrian attempts. But still, this isn't far-fetched... there are a ton of phrases that emulate this way of thinking, "Dress for the job you want" "Dress for success". There are many versions of those phrases, and I'd have to agree with them all for the most part. Your appearance is important, they say people make their first impression within three-seven seconds of meeting a person. It sorta sux that people judge so quickly, but that's life... and three to seven seconds isn't enough time to carry out an intellectual conversation, but if you look good then you're off to a nice start. ( this is random, but Will Smith's movie, Six Degrees of Seperation comes to mind)

Okay, so we've covered the definition, history, and modern adaptions of dandy philosophy, now I think it's appropriate to figure out who the modern day dandies are.

Alright, so I did a well-rounded best-dressed list back in June 2008 that included- Kanye West, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, David Beckham, Pharrell Williams, Andre Benjamin, Fonzworth Bentley, Johnny Depp, etc. And I think all of these guys could possibly be dandies, depending on the definition given. But obviously everyone can't be a dandy... here's my dandy check-list:

A dandy must:

1. place importance on being well-dressed
2. be well-mannered and elegant in speech and living -OR- be flamboyant in his "acts" of elegance.

I think there are two types of dandies: the traditional dandy and flamboyant dandy or maybe I should say the intrinsic dandy and the extrinsic dandy. I find that many people these days are moreso extrinsically dandy than intrinsically dandy, either one is okay, but I have a preference for those who are intrinsically dandy.

Fonzworth Bentley is indeed a dandy

Okay, so if I had to categorize the gents of today, then who would be what... well from the best-dressed list two guys instantly stand out- Kanye and Fonzworth. These are the main two guys from the list that I feel places great importance on being very well-dressed, and from those two I'd have to say Fonzworth Bentley is the intrinsic dandy, while Kanye West is an extrinsic dandy. Mr.Bentley doesn't over do it, he doesn't wear "loud clothing" or proclaims himself best-dressed, atleast I don't think he does. And he, much like George Brummel and other traditional dandies, wasn't born into an elite family, but rather found favor with the wealthy elite because of his style and mannerisms. Bentley was a maître d' at a New York restaurant and was "discovered" by Diddy... the rest of the story you know. Mr. West on the other hand, though I love his style, he can often go overboard and places Too much emphasis on designer labels, when that is Not what style is about. The perfect example of the two types would be Kanye's emphasis trip to Paris earlier this year...

I honestly think it's hard to place celebrities in one of the dandy categories because many of them dress nice, ONLY because of their fame. It's hard to figure out who just has "it" and would still have "it" if they were working a regular 9-5. For that reason, I feel photographers, writers, artist and such are better people to give such a title too. Scott Schuman, the Sartorialist himself, is a given traditional dandy to me... he observes people, beauty, style and (from what I can tell) is an intrinsically elegant man. I'm sure many of you have atleast one person in mind that could be either of the two types of dandies....

Scott the Sartorialist

It's easier for me to group celebrities of the past as dandies... Fred Astaire is often categorized as a dandy, I think the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford) were dandies of their time, I'd have to be candid and say a good amount people of color in entertainment in the 50s, 60s, were intrinsic dandies- being extremely elegant was the only way many of them would even be given the opportunity to entertain despite their musical genuis (so Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, etc etc).

Rat Pack

Nat King Cole

Fred Astaire

Perhaps in a decade or so we'll look back and call Michael Jackson a sort of dandy- who knows... I think dandyism is still very much in play today, it's just a little harder to point out. Who would you all consider a (modern) dandy?

Andre Benjamin... I'd call him a southern dandy
